MEDIA RELEASE:

VCCFA September 2nd, 2025

Another 31 Layoff Notices

This first day of the fall semester has been a sour one for more than 30 faculty at VCC.

This morning these faculty in six different departments received their notice that this will be their last semester. When the next semester starts in January, they will be gone.

On top of this at least 70 term faculty in these same departments already have lost their normal assignments.

This is the third round of cuts of a similar number in this calendar year.

The federal government’s relatively sudden cuts to English language training and now International Student visas are the immediate causes.

Worst Ever & More to Come

This is the worst funding crisis in the history of BC post-secondary. It’s left VCC and most other BC post-secondary institutions unable to balance their books. All they can do is cut, and then cut again. Today they said we can expect a fourth round in January.

Need for a Rethink

The provincial government’s reliance on International funding has had a good run, twenty+ years. It’s over. They cannot expect domestic students to take up the slack through higher tuition, the tuition-based model has run its course, it’s over.

We call on the provincial government to provide temporary relief to institutions in order to save programming and call on it to lead a provincial and national reconsideration of how post-secondary programming can be sustained into the future.

The students need it, BC and Canada need it.
